Shrinking electronics tops design trends for 2019

Forget AI or 5G, according to new research making devices smaller and more compact will be the number one design priority for electronics engineers in 2019.

That’s according to a recent poll by thermal simulation software provider Future Facilities, conducted at this year’s Engineering Design Show, held last month at the Ricoh stadium, in Coventry.

The research surveyed over 100 electronics professionals and engineers, and found that a third believe that shrinking device sizes will have more of an impact on the electronics industry than new technology developments such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT).

Other trends defining electronic design in 2019 included: the internet of things, the need to add AI capabilities, extending battery life and incorporating edge computing into designs.

The research makes for interesting reading but, rather depressingly, making devices greener and more sustainable ranked lowest in the poll. Just 2% of engineers polled agreed that it was their top priority for 2019.
