Industry's smallest 20A power module

Exar has introduced the XR79120, a 20A single output, synchronous step-down power module in a 12 x 14 x 4mm package. The XR79120 is claimed to offer greater than 93% peak efficiency and leverages constant on-time (COT) control architecture across a 4.5 to 22 VIN range. This allows single supply operation from industry standard 5, 12 and 19.6V rails.

The XR79120 provides a fully integrated power converter combining MOSFETs, inductors, and internal input and output capacitors. QFN-based package technology provides high thermal performance, eases electrical debugging and improves manufacturability with higher assembly yield and the ability to visually inspect solder joints. At 50°C with no airflow, no thermal de-ratings are required for output voltages of 1.8V and below.

"Delivering 20A from a 12V supply in a 12 x 14 x 4mm module sets this device apart in the market," said Jon Cronk, Exar's marketing director."By optimising efficiency, size and thermal performance, the XR79120 boasts the best power density available."
