Smallest 12V DC/DC step-down power solution

A pair of 12V, 10A, 4MHz step-down power modules from Texas Instruments measuring 11 x 15mm are said to be 20% smaller than any other 10A power module-based solution.

The SWIFT TPSM84A21 and TPSM84A22 DC/DC modules integrate power MOSFETs, shielded inductors, input and output capacitors, and passives. This eliminates the loop compensation and magnetics part selection from the design process.

In addition, they are said to feature only 1% overshoot in transient conditions without special magnetics or additional capacitors.

By using the module together with the WEBENCH Power Designer, the company claims engineers can get their space-constrained point-of-load telecom, networking, and test and measurement power-supply designs to market faster.

The modules require one external voltage-setting resistor for a complete 12V step-down power solution. For an application such as powering tightly regulated FPGA rails, the TPSM84A21 provides low output ripple due to a high 4MHz switching frequency and integrated 185µF of output capacitance, which maintains regulation accuracy without any external capacitors.
