Monolithic Power Systems has announced what it claims to be the industry's smallest 3A 20V synchronous step down regulator.

The MP28258 converter is a 2x3mm QFN package and, according to the fabless semiconductor specialist, is suitable for converting power from a 4.25 to 20V input range to a 0.815 to 13V output range with load current of up to 3A. It targets point of load designs for a range of space constraint applications in consumer, storage and networking. The device features adaptive constant on time (COT) control method, integrated power FETs with low on resistance RDS(on) and power good indicator. Adaptive COT control is designed to eliminate complicated loop compensation and increase flexibility with output capacitor selection. According to MPS, it also provides ultra fast transient response and high light load efficiency – achieving up to 95% peak efficiency at 12V input and 5V output. "Delivering a high performance device in an ultra small footprint such as the MP28258 is a testament to MPS' leading edge process technology and design capabilities," said Katherine Hoang, product marketing manager at Monolithic Power Systems. "The MP28258 is more than 50% smaller than the competition. Many MPS customers benefit from not only the performance, but also from overall system size reduction due to the miniature IC size and minimal external components, which results in more space and cost savings."
