DC/DC step down power modules have high efficiency

Intersil has unveiled two single-channel DC/DC step down power modules that are said to deliver high power density with an efficiency of up to 95%.

The pin compatible 5A ISL8205M and 3A ISL8202M provide point-of-load (POL) conversions for FPGAs, DSPs and MCUs in a range of consumer and portable industrial equipment powered by Li-ion batteries. The encapsulated modules are said to be power supplies that include a controller, MOSFETs, inductor and passive components.

Both devices can be mounted on the backside of a PCB, freeing space for topside mounted components. Both also support inputs ranging from 2.6 to 5.5V and feature adjustable outputs as low as 0.6V.

Supplied in a 22 lead QFN package measuring 4.5 x 7.5 x 1.8mm, both devices feature a copper lead frame structure, allowing them to operate at full load over a wide temperature range with no airflow or heatsinks.

With a switching frequency adjustable from 680kHz to 3.5MHz, with a default frequency of 1.8MHz, the parts accept external clock signal synchronisation up to 3.5MHz.

Fault protections include input under-voltage lockout, over-temperature, over-current/short-circuit with hiccup mode, over-voltage and negative over-current. A programmable soft-start reduces inrush current, while automatic output discharge ensures a soft stop.
