'Fastest' 16bit d/a converter runs at 2.5GS/s

The industry's fastest 16bit d/a converter has been unveiled by Texas Instruments.

The 4-channel, 2.5GS/s DAC38J84 is said to be 66% faster than competing devices. It also provides up to 2GHz of information bandwidth and supports the JEDEC JESD204B serial interface standard for data converters up to 12.5Gb/s. The DAC38J84, along with its sister device the DAC38J82, enables 2G/3G/4G cellular base stations to migrate to more advanced technologies, such as LTE-Advanced and carrier aggregation on multiple antennas. The d/a converters support up to 2GHz of information bandwidth for wideband power amplifier digital pre-distortion, millimetre wave backhaul infrastructure, signal jamming, radar and test equipment. The DAC37J84 consumes 1100mW at the common wireless base station condition of 1.474 GS/s, half that of competing devices. At 2.458GS/s, the DAC38J84 uses only 1612mW.
