'Fastest' A/D converter clocks in at 4Gsample/s

The industry's fastest 12bit A/D converter has been launched by Texas Instruments.

Clocking in at 4Gsample/s, the ADC12J4000 supports the JEDEC JESD204B serial interface standard for data converters up to 8Gbit/s, while consuming half the power of competing devices. Measuring just 9 x 9mm, TI claims it is also the smallest in its class. The ADC12J4000 provides RF sampling capabilities with more than 3GHz input bandwidth. It can be used in test and measurement, wireless, and defence applications, including spectrum analysers, munitions, digital pre-distortion feedback and radar. The converter combines TI's existing giga-sample A/D converter IP with low power digital processing blocks that provide digital filtering and down conversion. This enables system designers to sample a large block of frequency spectrum at RF and down convert it to quadrature in the digital domain, which can reduce signal distortion. What's more, because the ADC12J4000 utilides the JESD204B serial interface standard, TI says it can output data on up to eight lanes, depending on the decimation and link rate settings.
