TI announces ‘world’s smallest’ 16bit a/d converter

Texas Instruments has introduced what it claims to be the industry's smallest 16bit delta sigma a/d converter with integrated programmable gain amplifier, reference, temperature sensor and four input multiplexer.

Measuring 2 x 1.5mm, the ADS1118 is said to be more than 65% smaller than other 16bit converters on the market. It is designed to provide direct, linearised measurements with uncalibrated error guaranteed below 0.5°C from 0 to 65°C. According to TI, this represents a 75% improvement compared to competing devices. The ADS1118 has a built in internal reference, supporting data rates up to 860s/s. It also supports 2 to 5.5V power supplies while consuming 150uA (typical). The converter is designed to extend the battery life of portable, battery powered industrial devices for temperature measurement, gas monitoring, industrial process control and instrumentation.
