Industry's fastest 16bit A/D converter

Texas Instruments has announced the ADS54J60, which is claimed to be the industry's first 16bit 1Gsample/s A/D converter and the first to achieve a signal to noise ratio of more than 70dBFS at 1Gsample/s. The device is suited for use in defence and aerospace, test and measurement, and communication infrastructure applications.

With a high signal-to-noise ratio, the device has a noise floor of -159dBFS/Hz for applications aiming for dynamic range over a wide bandwidth. Available in a 10 x 10mm package, the device supports the JESD204B serial interface with data rates up to 10Gbit/s, supporting two or four lanes per converter and simplifying connections to processors and FPGAs.

The buffered analogue input provides uniform input impedance across a wide frequency range while minimising sample and hold glitch energy. Each A/D converter channel can be connected to a wideband digital down converter block. The ADS54J60 is said to provide excellent spurious free dynamic range of 86dBc over a large input frequency range with low power consumption, allowin weak signals to be detected in the presence of large, unwanted blockers.
