China to examine Micron's products for cybersecurity risks

The long running ‘spat’ between the US and China has taken another turn with the news that China's cyberspace regulator is to conduct a cybersecurity review of products sold in the county by Micron Technology, the US memory company.

While the authorities in China have not revealed which products will be reviewed the move is part of a much bigger game that has been ongoing for years, that involves protecting supply chains and safeguarding national security.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) is said to be in talks with Micron, which has itself said that while it is fully co-operating with the authorities it is standing by the security of its products.

Over the past couple of years the US has imposed a series of export controls on chipmaking technology to China and has blacklisted a growing number of China's largest chip firms. Last week Japan said it would be aligning its technology trade controls with the US, following a similar move by the Netherlands.

The move by the Chinese authorities could suggest that we’re now seeing a shift in Chinese policy and consequently companies with exposure to the Chinese economy could now find themselves facing similar actions going forward.
