A new application processor for mobile phones has been described as the first in the industry to deliver full high definition video recording and playback support.

According to Renesas Technology Europe, the video processing unit of the SH-MobileHD1 delivers approximately six times the performance of comparable earlier products, enabling support for full HD video (1920 × 1080 pixels) on a single chip. The new processor has low power consumption, more robust multimedia functionality and has been designed to facilitate more compact video and audio processing systems for mobile phones. Renesas revealed that the IC's maximum operating frequency of 500 MHz is approximately twice as fast as its earlier comparable products and the device supports the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression standard at full HD video resolution with a playback/recording frame rate of 30 frames per second. The SH-MobileHD1 incorporates two 24bit dedicated audio dsps - one to handle (stereo) audio processing such as the advanced audio coding high quality audio compression standard and Dolby Digital codec, while the other dsp handles sonic enhancement such as equalisation and sample rate conversion. In addition, heavy load processing tasks such as 5.1 channel audio can be assigned to the dual dsps.
