A new series of SoCs provides low power consumption for next generation dashboard mounted car navigation systems, according to Renesas Electronics and its subsidiary, Renesas Mobile. The first release in its R-Car series, the M1 series, is also designed to support advanced human machine interfaces (hmi).

Renesas has integrated its SH-Navi and EMMA Car series which it says have high adoption rates in car infotainment systems. According to Renesas, integration of the dedicated circuitry for intelligent multimedia processing saves approximately 92% of power in full 1920 x 1080 pixel high definition video coding compared to previous products. The R-Car M1 SoCs have been developed for mid range systems which the company believes will become the highest volume segment in the market. The devices' dedicated power supply IC, for use in a voltage regulator, is also said to improve on the company's existing products by approximately 20%. The devices incorporate ARM Cortex-A9 and Renesas Electronics SH-4A cpu cores operating at up to 800MHz and delivering up to 3.7GIPS. The company is looking to address the lower power consumption requirements of dashboard mounted car navigation systems, especially when used in electric vehicles. Samples of the R-Car M1 series of SoCs will be available in May 2011, with mass production scheduled to begin in June 2012.
