Demand for semis softens, says ESIA

Global sales of semiconductors in January 2016 amounted to $26.88billion – a decrease of 2.7% compared to December 2015 – according to figures released by the European Semiconductor Industry Association. The body says the results are in line with seasonal patterns, noting the first months of the year are usually slower for semiconductors.

As far as Europe is concerned, sales declined by 1.7% to $2.72bn compared to December 2015. Nevertheless, said the group, demand in Europe remained strong for several key product categories, with steady growth seen in demand for discretes, optosensing and emitting chips, analogue devices, logic ICs and application specific devices. In terms of sectoral demand, worldwide sales of chips into the automotive industry ‘grew strongly’ compared to December, it claims.

When stated in Euros, semiconductor sales were €2.512bn in January 2016, down 0.6% versus the previous month, but 4% higher than January 2015.
