Converter range 'smallest' of its kind

Torex Semiconductor claims its 3MHz synchronous step down dc/dc converter range is 'one of the smallest solutions of its kind'.

Featuring an integrated 1.5uH coil, the XCL205/206/207 series is 600mA and measures 2.5 x 2mm, with a package profile of 1mm. According to Torex, the converters require two external capacitors to configure a step down circuit capable of providing efficiencies in excess of 85%. The semiconductor specialist says the range is particularly suitable for applications that require high efficiency and low output noise in a small PCB area. Traditionally, to bring an ic and coil together in one package requires the dc/dc die to be placed alongside a coil in a moulded package. Torex has developed an alternate system which places the thin film power inductor around the converter, enabling small configurations. The XCL205/206/207 device has an input voltage range of 2 to 6V and is said to deliver output voltages from 0.8 to 4.0V (+/-2%). Control is PWM (XCL205), PWM/PFM Automatic (XCL206) or user selectable between either fixed PWM or PWM/PFM automatic switching (XCL207).
