Britain set to lose ‘best tech talent’

In an interview with The Times newspaper this weekend, Hermann Hauser, the founder of Acorn Computers and Arm, along with Anne Glover, the tech investor, warned that the UK would lose a growing number of technology companies and entrepreneurs if it failed to provide the capital for fast growing businesses.

Between the two of them, Hauser and Glover have backed upwards of 190 companies over 25 years via their investment firm – Amadeus Capital.

Companies, those mainly looking to raise a few million pounds up to £100m, are struggling to find the necessary funds, they warned and suggested that the economic downturn meant that companies were struggling to domestically source and taking far longer to raise the funds they need.

As a result, Amadeus is now turning to Korea, Singapore and Japan in order to raise funds to support UK technology companies.

Brexit is also causing problems for the technology sector in the UK, according to Hauser, who said that the UK was witnessing a ‘brain-drain- back to Europe and the UK’s continuing exclusion from Horizon was creating uncertainty.

Glover added that while the UK had been one of the most open and collaborative scientific countries in the world, global collaboration was now increasingly at risk.

While a strong domestic technology sector is vital for the UK, so too is a strong domestic investment community.
