Toshiba launches ultra-small 13 megapixel CMOS image sensor

Toshiba Electronics Europe has launched the T4KB3, a 13-megapixel backside illumination (BSI) CMOS image sensor with an optical format of 1/3.07 inch. Capable of video capture at up to 120fps with full 1080p HD, the image sensor has been designed for use in high end smartphones and tablets.

With demand growing for small form factor chips, the T4KB3 makes use of newly developed design techniques to deliver a 13 megapixel sensor, that measures just 8.5 mm x 8.5 mm, with auto focus, and 6.7 mm x 6.7 mm with a static focus. Low power circuitry has reduced power consumption, to 53% of that used by the preceding T4K82 image sensor, and the new chip achieves 200mW, or less at 30fps, with full 13 megapixel output.

Image brightness has been boosted four fold by utilising Bright Mode technology and the T4K82 offers full 1080p HD video capture at 120fps. The sensor is fitted with 8Kbit of One Time Programmable (OTP) memory and lens shading correction data for two conditions can be stored. This permits different correction data for indoor or outdoor use.
