High power density DC-DC PoL converters for FPGA and programmable logic designs

Murata has developed a series of miniature “Mono Block” type surface mount point-of-load (PoL) DC-DC converters. The MYMGK series of non-isolated “Mono Block” type converters are available in two models, a 6 Amp and a 20 Amp.

Each is available with two output voltage range options and typical applications include powering FPGAs and CPUs used in data, telecommunications and networking communications equipment, and in equipment using distributed bus architectures.

The use of increasingly compute intensive devices such as programmable logic, FPGAs and CPU tends to require much more reliable power supplies that are able to respond to load variations, provide good transient response as well as a low core voltage high current supply. The MYMGK series is able to deliver fast transient response with a minimum of external output capacitors, meaning that board size can be reduced significantly.

Designed to be highly efficient these ultra-compact converters are typically between 87.8% to 95% model and load dependent and meet the industrial and telecom requirements for size, efficiency and power density, especially in high temperature operating case.

Measuring 9.0 x 7.5 x 5.0 mm, the 6 Amp MYMGK1R806FRSR has a programmable output voltage in the range 0.7 to 1.8 VDC from a + 5 VDC input. The MYMGK00506ERSR also can deliver up to 6 Amp output in the range 0.7 to 5.0 VDC from a + 12 VDC nominal input.

The 20 Amp models measure 10.5 x 9.0 x 5.6 mm and include the MYMGK1R820FRSR, operating from a + 5 VDC nominal input and the MYMGK1R820ERSR, from a + 12 VDC nominal. The output voltage can be programmed in the range 0.7 to 1.8 VDC.

Across the range control signals include remote on/off and a power good indication. Safety and protection features include under input voltage lock out (UVLO), output short circuit and output over current.
