Distributors add high-resolution camera module to Raspberry Pi peripherals

Distributors RS Components (RS) and element14 are extending their portfolio of Raspberry Pi peripherals with the launch of the new Raspberry Pi Camera Board Version 2.

Available to order from both distributors the camera board can be connected to any Raspberry Pi board or the Raspberry Pi Compute Module. The cameras are backwards compatible with all Raspberry Pi boards and have the same footprint and weight as the previous 5MP cameras. Users will be able to create HD videos or take digital still photographs.

These official Raspberry Pi cameras have been upgraded to 8MP and feature an image sensor that enables the board to capture 3280 x 2464 pixel static images. Delivering functionality for a variety of camera applications they are suitable for both beginners and for more advanced users.

The v2 cameras have the same video capability as the original cameras supporting 1080p30, 720p60 and 640x480p90 video, and are linked to the Raspberry Pi board through a dedicated CSi interface. The NoIR camera v2 has a No InfraRed (NoIR) filter on the lens making it suitable for infrared photography or for taking pictures in lowlight environments.

The camera modules are 25mm x 35mm x9mm which means that they can be used in a variety of applications including low-light photography (NoIR Camera), drones, CCTV, weather stations, school projects etc.

The camera module connects to Pi models via a 15cm ribbon cable that attaches to the module slot and then plugs directly into the board’s CSI-2 port (Camera Serial Interface). Once connected, the camera board can be accessed via the Multi-Media Abstraction Layer (MMAL) or the Video for Linux (V4L) APIs, as well as by using libraries that are available online such as Python Picamera.

Other specifications of the module include: a maximum supported resolution of 3280 x 2464 pixels and an operating temperature range of –20°C up to +60°C.
