Major shake up in semiconductor rankings

The economic downturn has resulted in a major shake up of the top 20 semiconductor companies rankings.

IC Insight's Q1 sales leader list reveals that, compared with 2008, only Intel, Samsung and Fujitsu remained in the same positions. TSMC faired particularly badly, dropping six positions, partly due to its Q1 sales down 57% compared with Q3 2008. However, there were some positives, with Toshiba rising one position to number 3 and Qualcomm, moving up from number 8 in Q4 2008 to number 6 in Q1 2009. ST, Sony, AMD, Micron and Broadcom also achieved higher positions than their respective 2008 rankings.
