Broadcom announces 64bit ARM core

Broadcom has introduced an ARMv8 multicore processor architecture for networking and communications chips.

The new server class cpu is a quad issue, quad threaded 64bit ARMv8-A core with superscalar out of order execution. The custom core will initially be made in the 16nm FinFET process node and will power SoCs aimed at server, comms, storage and security systems. "By offering the industry's highest performance ARM based multicore processor architecture, Broadcom is expanding its technical leadership in multiple generations of multicore processing," said Broadcom's Ron Jankov. "Our innovations in the cpu core and comprehensive virtualisation, along with our adoption of 16nm FINFET technology, will further separate us from our competitors." The news signals Broadcom's shift away from MIPS to ARM. It follows similar announcements from a number of its top competitors.
