VATN displays with the Midas touch coming soon to Rapid Electronics

Wide viewing angles, very high contrast ratios and low backlight leakage make VATN displays an ideal compromise between LCD and OLED functionality and performance. For the first time ready-made VATN displays from Midas Components will soon be available from Rapid in seven different sizes and five backlight colours.

Coming soon to Rapid Electronics is a range of VATN (Vertically Aligned Twisted Nematic) LCD displays from Midas Components – offering a wider viewing angle, higher contrast ratio and blacker background than standard twisted nematic or super twisted nematic LCDs. These VATN displays provide an excellent alternative for the buyer looking for a display at a performance and price point between LCD and OLED.

This is the first standard range of Midas VATN alphanumeric display modules to be available from Rapid.

Why is the contrast so much sharper on a display that incorporates VATN technology?

The liquid crystals of a VATN display remain perpendicular to the substrate when the device is switched off. When a voltage is applied the oval shaped VATN molecules align vertically rather than horizontally, acting as a more effective barrier to the backlight. Leakage is kept to a minimum. Approximately 5-10% of light escapes from twisted nematic or super twisted nematic effect displays, but less than 1% is lost from VATN LCDs. The effect is that bright coloured characters are rendered on a truly black background, without the hot spots that might occur in traditional LCD displays.

The key attributes of the Midas VATN LCD display range are:

• Very high contrast ratio – 120:1

• Wide viewing angles, up to 170° (Horizontal) and 110° (Vertical)

• -30 to +80°C Operating Temperature

• Built-in HD44780 compatible controllers

• High backlight brightness

• Super black background

The modules are available in seven industry standard character sizes, such as 8x2, 16x1, 16x2 and 20x4. Backlight colours include white, yellow, blue, green and red. For more information visit the Rapid Electronics website - www.rapidonline.com – or call Rapid on +44 (0)1206 751166.
