140W buck-boost regulator is ‘best in class’

Vicor’s Cool-Power ZVS buck-boost regulator portfolio has been expanded with the addition of the PI3740. Delivering up to 140W and up to 8A with an efficiency of up to 96%, the device accepts inputs in the range from 8 to 60V DC, producing a regulated output ranging from 10 to 50V DC.

Featuring Vicor’s zero voltage switching technology, the part is said to boast what the company calls a ‘best-in-class; combination of conversion efficiency, power density and performance.

The converter is said to be suited to a range of applications that would otherwise require the use of several regulators with narrower operating voltage ranges. A power supply incorporating a PI3740 can be designed to operate from, or charge, a 12V and a 24V battery source, with seamless transition from buck to boost modes.

The device integrates a controller, power switches and support circuitry into a system in package measuring 10 x 14 x 2.5mm. Operating at 1MHz, the controller supports constant-voltage and constant-current operating modes and features over-voltage, over-temperature and over-current protection.

Suitable for use in temperatures ranging from -40 to 115ºC, the PI3740 also features an integrated current sense amplifier and integrated general purpose amplifier.
