Renesas joins LoRa, plans wireless MCUs ‘within a year’

Renesas Electronics has joined the LoRa Alliance as a sponsor member. According to the company, the move will enable it to contribute to the standardisation and promotion of LoRaWAN.

It says that, within a year, it will offer MCUs supporting LoRaWAN, adding the compact nature of its MCU packages will simplify their integration into systems and reduce board area, compared to conventional packaging methods. Based on these technologies, Renesas intends to deliver a total ‘wireless network solution’, combining wireless MCU and software.

One of the first families likely to feature LoRaWAN functionality is the low-power RL78 MCU range.
