Renesas adds to R-Car automotive SoC series

1 min read

Designed to offer low power consumption and enhanced system integration, the new R-Car E1 SoC from Renesas Electronics is targeted at car navigation and multimedia systems including high end car radios.

The automotive chip is powered by a single ARM Cortex A9 32bit RISC cpu core running at 533MHz, which is optimised to achieve a maximum processing power of 1,330DMIPS. The Imagination Technologies PowerVRTM SGX531 gpu is said to be able to process up to 14M triangles/s and be capable of delivering up to 1.4gigaflops for accelerated graphics. The R-Car E1 SoCs are equipped with various standard and automotive communication interfaces, including CAN, MOST, Ethernet, UART, SPI, I²S and I²C. They also offer cd rom hardware decoding capabilities and media interfaces for digital formats such as sd and usb. Multiple channels of 10 a/d converters have been implemented to simplify the interface to gyroscopes and accelerometers. Two output displays are supported; the first is a digital RGB interface targeted for the main screen, while the second is an analogue output supporting PAL/NTSC formats. The integrated digital camera interface is designed to facilitate the integration of backup camera or external video content.
