Emerson Network Power has announced a high efficiency dc input 1200W bulk front end power supply for systems that use distributed power architectures.

The new DS1200DC-3 power supply is digitally programmable via an I2C interface and is PMBus compliant. According to Emerson, it provides a flexible and cost effective means of accommodating the high bulk power demands of networking equipment. Developed specifically for systems co-located with telecom and central office applications operating from 48V battery plants, the power supply has an input voltage range of -40 to -72Vdc. In addition to its main +12Vdc output, which can deliver up to 100amps continuously, the power supply also generates an auxiliary 'always on' output for powering standby circuitry. Housed in a plug in rack mounting module, the device has a 1U x 2U form factor, measuring 1.6 x 3.2in. According to Emerson, efficiency is in excess of 85% at half load and power density is 21.7W/in3. The power supply has an operating temperature range of -10 to 55°C and features a built in cooling fan with automatic speed control. Forward and reversed airflow versions are available to simplify integration with the rack's cooling layout. The power supply features active current sharing, which operates from 10 to 100% of full load, allowing multiple supplies to be paralleled for high current applications.
