Looking to get a strong position in the 10Gbit passive optical networking (PON) market ahead, Phyworks has unveiled a 10Gbit Ethernet PON XFP transceiver demonstration module.

Phyworks ceo Steve King said: “We’re showing customers how to use our chips to build an effective 10G device. The module will help to enable the next wave of infrastructure, driving down cost and providing more bandwidth.” The module supports single channel asymmetric transmit and receive, with sensitivity greater than -30dBm at a bit error rate of 10^-3. The receive path uses the PHY1090, a high sensitivity transimpedance amplifier, and the PHY1060, an integrated post amplifier, equaliser and retimer. Meanwhile, the transmit path uses the PHY2078, a 1.25Gbit/s burst mode laser driver. Key challenges for the design included distortion in the connector and signal dispersion over long fibre hauls. The first has been solved using the integrated retimer, whilst the second is handled by patented equaliser technology, which allows the use of lower cost DFB lasers.
