Intel Core processors based on the 'Haswell' microarchitecture will consume more than 20 times less power in platform idle mode than 2nd generation devices, according to Dadi Perlmutter, pictured, the company's chief product officer.

"The 4th generation Intel Core processor family and our new line of low power processors will usher in an era of unprecedented innovation in mobile computing," Perlmutter told the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. "Our focus to deliver even lower power with the great performance that our processors are known for is as fundamentally significant as when we shifted our development focus beyond sheer processor speed in 2001. As a result, you'll see our customers delivering sleek and cool convertible designs, as well as radical breakthrough experiences across a growing spectrum of mobile devices." Processors based on the Haswell microarchitecture will broaden the company's mobile roadmap, said Perlmutter. He said the parts, designed for 22nm processes, will initially consume about 10W, allowing thinner, lighter computing devices with better performance and battery life. He also said the next generation Atom processor, codenamed Clover Trail, will be an SoC architected specifically for Windows 8. Manufactured on Intel's 32nm process technology, the SoC will be targeted at lightweight tablets and convertible devices, offering 'outstanding' battery life and always on technology.
