NXP expands Caen R&D operations

NXP Semiconductors has opened a new R&D centre in Caen, aiming to develop technology that will improve products such as digital tvs and mobile phones. The new centre will take the number of engineers on the Caen site to 800.

Frans van Houten, NXP’s president and ceo, pictured, said: “It demonstrates the importance of Europe in our annual €1billion R&D program. Our 6000 strong European R&D team consistently delivers the technologies that enable our customers to bring competitive and differentiating products to market”. The Caen R&D teams are developing technologies for four of NXP’s focus areas – mobile and personal; home; multimarket semiconductors; and identification. R&D areas include: rf technologies, silicon tuners, system in package process technologies and semiconductor solutions such as Near Field Communication. In addition to the NXP activities, the Caen facility houses a joint research institute with CNRS. ISyTest – the Institute for System Testing – aims to develop innovative testing methods and techniques to improve the level of quality of NXP’s increasingly complex system solutions.
