Nordic Semiconductor has unveiled a new high-performance application processor with a fully programmable, ultra-low power network processor.

The nRF5340TM is a multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC) and is the first member of the company’s next generation of nRF5 Series SoCs.

It introduces a new flexible, dual-processor hardware architecture with advanced security features. In addition, the nRF5340TM supports RF protocols including Bluetooth 5.1/Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE), Bluetooth mesh, Thread, and Zigbee.

"Bluetooth, Thread, Zigbee and other low power wireless technologies now form a critical part of the IoT,” commented Kjetil Holstad, Director of Product Management at Nordic Semiconductor. “Developers are already working on tomorrow's commercial products based on highly-complex applications such as property tech, location services, medical, smart home, and Industrial IoT. The nRF5340 SoC is designed to meet these needs and more.”

The nRF5340 SoC is designed for extended operating temperature up to 105°C, together with multiprotocol support and advanced security features – the company explain this makes it suited for professional lighting and industrial applications. Further, the SoC’s high performance application processor is matched to a generous 512 KB of RAM, which means it can meet the demands of next generation sophisticated wearables.
