NEC and Renesas merger postponed

NEC Electronics and Renesas Technology have postponed an agreement to integrate business operations until the end of August.

The Japanese chip manufacturers have postponed the target deadline because of a delay in completing due diligence on the companies' assets, including the manufacturing and sales sites worldwide. However, both companies maintained their target date of April 2010 to complete the merger. The merger will result in the formation of the third largest chipmaker in the world – behind Intel and Samsung Electronics. The new company will have three major product groups, mcus, SoCs and discrete products. The integration of the mcu suppliers, will enable the new company to focus on SoCs products and there are plans to enhance the competitiveness of analogue and discrete products that generate synergies with mcus.
