Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer to step down

Microsoft's chief executive Steve Ballmer is to retire within the next 12 months, once the company has found a suitable successor.

"There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time," Ballmer said in a statement. "We need a ceo who will be here longer term for this new direction." Ballmer is currently overseeing the transformation of Microsoft into a devices and services company. A special committee has been set up to find his replacement, which includes Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
