IP security technology makes first appearance in commercial chip

IP security specialist Intrinsic-ID has announced that Hardware Intrinsic Security (HIS) technology is being used by Dialog Semiconductor in the SC144453S voice over IP chip. The move represents the first commercial use of HIS.

Pim Tuyls, Intrinsic's ceo, said: "HIS technology ensures all software related to VoIP calls is authenticated, providing a secure comms system." René Kohlmann, a senior Dialog director, said the move had been made in response to broad interest from VoIP phone developers. "Many manufacturers are interested in this technology because it ensures only genuine software can run on their phones; security is their top priority. We are offering something no other company can and we chose Intrinsic's technology because it was easy to implement." According to Kohlmann, the SC144453S is being manufactured on a 60nm process. "It was easy to implement and we got the chip right first time." HIS technology relies on the creation of a 'silicon fingerprint' from the associated hardware. "We're the only company which can do this digitally," Tuyls noted. "This means we can provide it as a secure IP block, which acts as the basis for anti piracy systems."
