Intel has unveiled the first processors manufactured on 22nm technology. The IvyBridge range – now officially known as the 3rd generation Intel Core processor family – features the company's 3d trigate transistors.

According to Intel, the combination of its 3d trigate transistor technology and architectural enhancements allow 3d graphics and HD media processing performance to be doubled, compared with the previous generation. Improvements to the design of the microprocessor are said to bring a performance boost of up to 20%, while new technologies have bee applied to speed get data on and off chip more quickly. "The 3rd generation Intel Core processors were created from the ground up to generate exciting new experiences," claimed Kirk Skaugen, general manager of Intel's PC Client Group. "Our engineers have exceeded our expectations by doubling the performance of media and graphics versus the best processors we've built until today, which means incredible new visual experiences are here for new all in one pcs and upcoming Ultrabook devices." Additional members of the new processor family will be rolled out over the coming months and the devices will feature in computing products ranging from Ultrabook devices to servers and intelligent systems.
