Intel Ultrabook to take on iPad?

1 min read

Intel, in a bid to compete with the tablet market, has announced a new category of laptops – the Ultrabook.

The laptop will be powered by its second generation Core processors and, according to the chip manufacturer, will be less than an inch thick, incorporate a high resolution 11.6in screen, have long battery life due to a solid state drive and start up in seconds. It will sell for less than $1000. Tablets, such as the iPad, have eaten into the laptop market which is often constrained by high prices and chips that don't deliver enough performance. Intel says it aims to convert 40% of consumer laptops to the new category by the end of 2012. Although Intel's processors power 80% of worldwide pcs, its chips have yet to make an impact in the tablet and smartphone market, which has been dominated by ARM. The company is expected to demonstrate the first pc in the Ultrabook at the Computex technology exhibition in Taipei.
