Intel spends in New Mexico

Intel is investing up to $1.5billion in its Rio Rancho site to retool Fab 11X for 45nm manufacturing. The site will be the company’s fourth 45nm facility and production is scheduled to start in the second half of 2008.

Paul Otellini, Intel's president and ceo, said: "Our Rio Rancho site has successfully operated in New Mexico for 27 years. Based on that success, we are pleased to position Fab 11X for Intel's next generation of technology." Intel will initially produce 45nm devices at its D1D facility in Oregon. But production will roll out at Fab 32 in Arizona (pictured) later this year and at Fab 28 in Israel in the first half of 2008. Fab 11Xcurrently makes 90nm designs on 300mm wafers. When it entered production in October 2002, the facility was Intel's first 300mm high volume plant.
