Intel has announced that it plans to buy Movidius, the developer of low power, high performance SoC platforms for accelerating computer vision applications. According to Intel, Movidius’ technology will help to further develop its RealSense capabilities.

According to Josh Walden, general manager of Intel’s New Technology Group: “We see massive potential for Movidius to accelerate our initiatives in new and emerging technologies. The ability to track, navigate, map and recognise scenes and objects opens opportunities in areas where heat, battery life and form factors are key.”

Walden noted the technology is likely to be deployed to support Intel’s ambitions in such emerging markets as augmented, virtual and merged reality, drones, robotics and digital security cameras.

Movidius’ CEO Remi El-Ouazzanne added: “Our Vision Processing Unit, combined with Intel’s depth sensing solution, is a winning combination for autonomous machines that can see in 3D, understand their surroundings and navigate accordingly.

Movidius has been combining advanced algorithms with dedicated low power hardware. At Intel, we’ll be part of a team that is attacking this challenge from the cloud, through the network and on the device. This is very exciting.”
