Infineon to pay €260m in settlement with Qimonda’s administrator

Infineon Technologies has reached an out of court agreement with the administrator of Qimonda under which all disputes between the two – with the exception of a pending lawsuit – are settled. The agreement calls for Infineon to pay €135million to the administrator as well as acquiring all Qimonda patents for a further €125m.

Qimonda was spun out of Infineon in May 2006, creating what was the second largest DRAM manufacturer. As DRAM prices collapsed in the following years, Qimonda experienced growing problems and filed for insolvency protection in 2009 with liabilities in excess of €1bn. Qimonda has since acted as a patent licensing company, looking to generate revenue from its IP portfolio. In 2013, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Mosaid – the IP management company now known as Conversant – which set the ground for the latter to license its IP portfolio. The insolvency administrator originally sued Infineon in 2010, alleging the latter misadministered the sale of Qimonda, resulting in financial damage.
