imec welcomes Kyocera into its research community

As part of its quest to increase the efficiency and lower the cost of solar cells, imec has invited Japanese electronics giant Kyocera into its research community.

The firm, described by imec as a 'powerhouse in the solar manufacturing business', will join the organisation's industrial affiliation programme (IIAP). The IIIAP is a multi-partner effort aimed at advancing next generation crystalline silicon solar cells. So far it has achieved efficiencies between 22.5 and 25%. imec's president and CEO Luc Van den hove, commented: "The commitment from Kyocera is a confirmation of the significance of our solar cell research for the global PV market. "It is my strongest conviction that only by investing in R&D and innovation, companies can prepare for the future and stay ahead of the competition in a challenging environment such as the PV market."
