IAR, Express Logic extend relationship as ThreadX integrated into Embedded Workbench

Following an agreement between the two companies, IAR Systems will sell and support Express Logic's ThreadX real time operating system and integrate it with Embedded Workbench. The move is said to answer demand for integrated, easy to use tools that make speed embedded software development.

John Carbone, pictured, Express Logic's vp of marketing, said the move was the latest in a 10 year relationship with IAR. "We now have closer links," he said, "for example, integration for the TraceX analysis tool." TraceX was something akin to a 'black box', with data stored in a circular buffer on the host. "We've automated the process of opening this 'black box'," Carbone continued, "but not after a crash; rather, when a program hits a breakpoint." The agreement also sees RTOS Awareness available within Embedded Workbench. "RTOS Awareness takes advantage of the fact the OS leaves a 'breadcrumb trail'," Carbone said. "When you hit a breakpoint, you get a list of threads and queues, as well as an execution profile tab which shows the percentage of cpu time used by each thread." In terms of the benefit of the move to both companies, Carbone said it was a 'natural evolution' of their relationship. "We're not expecting to do this with any other company," he claimed. "IAR is very strong where Express Logic is strong; in the ARM community."
