GaN technology developing

International Rectifier is continuing to commercialise its GaN power technology, according to Alberto Guerra, vp of strategic market development for the emerging technologies group, who said there has been 'important progress'.

The first GaN product, the iP2010, released last year, was designed for multiphase and point of load applications, including servers, routers, switches and general purpose dc/dc conversion. "We've boosted efficiency to 93% at 600MHz," said Guerra. "This is important in server applications, where every 1% improvement in efficiency is worth $5000 per year per server, and we're getting a lot of interest." Now, the company is looking to introduce a 600V switch diode in the middle of 2011. "A typical FRED diode has a recovery time of 50ns," Guerra noted. "We're looking for less than 10ns with the GaN part. This will improve overall efficiency and cost effectiveness."
