Freescale has opened a Discovery Lab in Toulouse. The incubator, intended to help inventors of the 'next big thing' to pursue their ideas, is the first to be located outside its Austin headquarters.

"We couldn't be more proud of what the Freescale Discovery Lab has accomplished in such a short period of time," said Gregg Lowe, Freescale's president and chief executive officer. "These labs will continue to be a haven for disruptive innovation that nurtures new ideas, bringing about dramatic improvements in technology that change the face of our industry." Each Freescale employee is encouraged to submit ideas and, if the idea is accepted, the employee is assigned either to the Austin or Toulouse Lab to work full time on the project. According to the company, more than 200 ideas have been submitted, with more than 20 employees currently working on nine projects, ranging from alternative materials to new packaging technology. David Kramer, director of the Austin Discovery Lab, said: "It's key to challenge the status quo in our industry. Freescale Toulouse has always demonstrated expertise, passion and enthusiasm for technology and this new Discovery Lab is the perfect environment to nurture new ideas for all our engineers."
