Flexible display market set to boom

1 min read

It's been around 15 years since Cambridge Display Technology embarked on its quest to develop flexible displays. Progress since then has been slower than many expected. But a recent report from IHS claims demand for flexible OLEDs is expected to grow by more than 300% in 2014, with sales reaching nearly $100million.

"The buzz about flexible displays has been growing ever since Samsung Display demonstrated bendable OLED products at the Consumer Electronics Show in January," said Vinita Jakhanwal, IHS' director of mobile and emerging displays and technology. "Samsung is expected to begin shipping its first flexible OLED display – a 5inch screen – in the second half of this year." Although flexible, Samsung's display is not expected to be bendable. However, rollable and foldable OLED screens are likely to be introduced after 2016, says IHS. *To learn more about flexible displays, why not attend the Electronics Design Show on 2 and 3 October? On Day One of the Show, Ian Reid, Strategic Marketing Director for Plastic Logic, will explore how the features of flexible electronics technology are driving innovation in this area.
