European chip sales rise for sixth consecutive month

Global chip sales rose for the sixth consecutive month in August to reach $25.87billion, up 6.4% from the same period last year.

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), this represents the largest year over year growth since March 2011. "Global semiconductor sales have now increased for six consecutive months, and the industry is well ahead of last year's pace," said Brian Toohey, SIA president and ceo. "Strong demand for memory products has driven sales in recent months, but sales were also up in August among non-memory products, demonstrating the breadth of the semiconductor market's strength." Regionally, the Americas saw the largest growth in sales year on year (23.3%), followed by Asia (7.6%) and Europe (5%). Sales decreased in Japan by 16%, but this has largely been attributed to the devaluation of the Japanese yen.
