embedded world: IAR to deliver first development tools for Renesas’ RL78 range

IAR Systems has launched the 'world's first' software development tools to support the RL78 range of microcontrollers from Renesas Electronics.

The company's Embedded Workbench is a set of C and C++ tools for building and debugging embedded system software and according to IAR, provides a completely integrated development environment, including a project manager, editor, build tools and debugger. IAR also used embedded world to announce that its compiler and debugger technology has been integrated to the open source Eclipse IDE platform. "Eclipse offers the possibility to streamline development processes by standardising on a single IDE for many different kinds of tools," said Stefan Skarin, ceo, IAR Systems. "We are integrating its leading technology for building and debugging software for embedded systems." While the proprietary IAR Embedded Workbench IDE is tailored specifically for developing embedded system software, Skarin claims the Eclipse version of the tools is designed to provide greater flexibility through its interoperability with the larger ecosystem. "Introducing a new Eclipse based tool set parallel to the existing IAR Embedded Workbench IDE offers our customers the possibility to choose their development environment" he said. "We are focusing our efforts on integrating our build tools and debugger functionality into Eclipse. That is where we can add value for our customers." The Eclipse integration consists of a plug in to Eclipse CDT, extending the IDE capabilities by providing compiler and build tools as well as the full integration of IAR C-SPY Debugger, replacing the GDB based debugger interface that is standard within Eclipse CDT.
