Sony has announced that it expects 3D televisions to account for up to 50% of its total tv shipments in the financial year to March 2013.

The Japanese electronics giant plans to roll out its 3D tvs next year and says it is pinning its hopes on the next generation displays to boost its tv business. Sony's executive deputy president, Hiroshi Yoshioka, announced that what Sony may really need for its money losing tv business is its own display technology and the ability to make its own displays. He observed that having to buy panels from Samsung – which has scored success with 3D technology - was one reason why Sony lags in flat panel LED backlight tvs. Yoshioka added that Sony could also upgrade its OLED technology. Sony is targeting a 20% global market share in the lcd tv market and $11billion in sales from 3D related products by the fiscal year ending March 2013. Yoshioka said that the 3D technology would focus on the gaming sector, notably for use with the Sony PlayStation.
