Chip sales up for sixth year running

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global sales of semiconductors in 2007 grew for the sixth year in a row, reaching a record level of $255.6billion.

“The major drivers of demand for semiconductors – personal computers, mobile handsets and consumer electronics – remained strong in 2007,” said SIA president George Scalise. “Traditional consumer electronics are also experiencing healthy growth. MP3/PMP player unit sales continue to grow at nearly 20% a year, lcd tv units grew by more than 50% and digital camera units grew by 20%.”
