Semi sales on the way up

Worldwide sales of semiconductors rose to $16.5billion in May, an increase of 5.4% from April, said the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). However, May's sales were 23.2% lower than those in May 2008.

"The May sales numbers reflect the third consecutive month of sequential growth for the semiconductor industry," said SIA president George Scalise. "The sequential monthly increases lead us to be cautiously optimistic about a return to normal seasonal patterns for the industry going forward." However, the picture for Europe is not so rosy. According to the figures, semiconductor sales grew by only 0.4% over April, but are 34.6% down on May 2008.
