Bringing lte to life in Japan

The completion of the first commercial long term evolution (lte) system network by the end of 2009, is under way in Japan.

Base station equipment manufacturer Fujitsu Limited is leveraging processors from Freescale Semiconductor to deliver the deployment of the next generation mobile broadband. Eisuke Iwabuchi, president of the wireless infrastructure group at Fujitsu explained: "Freescale's embedded processing intelligence will significantly improve our overall lte base station efficiency by providing higher throughput and increased system flexibility. As the leading supplier in the market with lte base stations, Fujitsu is pleased to offer our customers products that leverage the performance and programmability of Freescale's breakthrough technology." LTE looks set to succeed the current generation of UMTS 3G technology. For consumers, it promises to deliver almost instantaneous responsiveness for multimedia applications, as well as a wealth of new applications previously available only on a wired internet connection. For operators, it offers improved spectral efficiency, lower costs, better services and a platform for delivering premium applications cost effectively in both developed and emerging markets.
