ARMv8-A licence to open server opportunities in China

Chinese company Huaxintong Semiconductor Technology has signed a multiyear licence for the ARMv8-A architecture in a move that will enable Chinese companies to develop ARM based server chipsets for their home market. This, says ARM, will enable the large scale deployment of efficient server solutions.

“China is facing a mountain of data flowing through its data centres and finding solutions that are cost effective and efficient is a key priority,” said Pete Hutton, ARM’s president of products groups. “Huaxintong is creating a blueprint for new server systems and engaging with them is opening up exciting new opportunities for ARM-based servers.”

Huaxintong is a joint venture between China’s Guizhou province and a subsidiary of Qualcomm. The company’s chairman Ouyang Wu added: “Licensing the ARMv8-A architecture allows us to develop server chips that are more focused on addressing the needs of the Chinese market and cloud computing servers providing internet infrastructure.”
