ARM based SoCs tackle control and data plane apps

Cavium has announced the Octeon TX family, said to be a complete line of 64bit ARM based SoCs for control plane and data plane applications in networking, security and storage.

There are four Octeon TX variants – the CN80XX, CN81XX, CN82XX and CN83XX – featuring up to 24 full custom enhanced 64bit ARM v8.1 cores. This, says Cavium, provides the broadest range of 64bit ARM based SoCs for embedded processing applications.

With the introduction of OcteonTX, Cavium can now address control plane applications within enterprise, service provider, data centre networking and storage sectors. The devices are also optimised to run multiple concurrent data and control planes simultaneously.

“Cavium has delivered breakthrough performance for data plane and security applications with its multicore Octeon SoCs,” said Steve Klinger, general manager, infrastructure processor group. “The Octeon TX product line builds upon this success and expands the use of these products into control and embedded processing applications that leverage the fast growing ARM ecosystem and breadth of open source initiatives.”

Each part has the enhanced Thunder core running at up to 2.2GHz. The CN80XX and CN81XX lines feature from one to four cores and up to 2Mbyte of last level cache. The CN82XX and CN83XX variants have from eight to 24 cores and up to 8Mbyte of last level cache.

The CN80XX and CN81XX families will sample in Q2 2016, while the remaining devices will be sampling in Q3 2016.
